The Founder and Management

Chawan, the local kopi café, began operations on the 21st of August 2006, in the CHOW Food Gallery, Level 4, The Weld, Kuala Lumpur. The two partners of this fully owned local venture are Ahmad Farid Yahaya and Afzal Abdul Rahim. Chawan was created from the need to have a local coffee joint with all the comforts of a bistro, along with the added convenience of offering free Internet access to its customers.

Ahmad Farid Yahaya founder of Chawan, make his decision to resign his post as Chief Operating Officer of a public-listed plantation company, may be detrimental, especially that he had to reach high position at a young age. It is not appreciated, but may be due to corporate career he was growing up in the business world to his ardent with to operate his own business.

Ahmad Farid Yahaya who holds a Bachelor of Law, Staffordshire University, United Kingdom, began his career as an Executive Legal and Special Duties with Suasa Effective (M) Sdn Bhd in February, 2000.

He joined TDM Bhd between May 2000 until August 2004 for various capacities and his most recent role was Chief Operating Officer and Secretary of the company before proceeding to the business world.

After completing the nearly five years of service with the TDM Bhd, he saw his first opportunity in the field of food and beverage business by operating food courts in shopping complexes The Weld, Kuala Lumpur in August 2006. He is also the owner of Chawan, which is having an outlet at Bangsar, Citta Mall and Publika Solaris.

In nine years of doing business, Ahmad Farid has over 100 employees and expects an increase in number with the opening of new branches.

On future plans, Ahmad Farid said he planned to introduce a franchise scheme for entrepreneurs interested in expanding the range of efforts Chawan and stitch across the country. In future also he plans to develop a franchise system to support our branch operation, said Ahmad Farid Yahaya.

Looking forward, we continue to seek strategic opportunities for building our core business and activities. This also means a continued investment of resources and money to improve our human capital, production process and product quality.



Afzal Abdul Rahim has been Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer of Time Dotcom Bhd. since October 7, 2008.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with Electronics, specializing in Acoustic Wave Theory from the University of Sussex, UK. Before joining TIME dotCom in October 2008, he served as the CEO of The AIMS Asia Group and Global Transit International.

Afzal Abdul Rahim started his career in the automotive industry culminating in a regional role with GroupLotus PLC. A technology entrepreneur, he also founded the Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX), which was established in 2006.

His Professional Affiliation includes Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management (CPTM), Member of International Advisory Council, Global Smart Partnership Movement and Global Convenor-Club 29 Youth Movement.
